１３歳独少年がＮＡＳＡの計算ミス正す＝小惑星の地球衝突確率

　将来、地球に最接近する見通しの小惑星「アポフィス」をめぐり、ドイツの１３歳の少年が、
地球への衝突確率は４万５０００分の１とした米航空宇宙局（ＮＡＳＡ）の予測を「計算ミス」と
指摘、４５０分の１であると訂正した。ドイツの地元紙がこのほど伝えた。

　この少年はニコ・マルクワルト君。ポツダム天体物理学研究所のデータを用い、実際には
衝突確率がはるかに高いことを突き止めた。欧州宇宙機関（ＥＳＡ）はマルクワルト君の計算が
正しいことを認めたという。
　マルクワルト君は、アポフィスが２０２９年４月１３日に地球に最接近する際、そのころ地球を
周回していると予想される４万もの人工衛星のうち１つかそれ以上とぶつかる可能性を考慮。
これにより軌道変化が起き、次に最接近する２０３６年に地球に衝突する恐れがあるとした。
　ＮＡＳＡもマルクワルト君も、その場合は鉄とイリジウムでできた直径３２０メートル、
重さ２０００億トンもの塊が大西洋に落下すると予想。衝突の衝撃波により巨大な津波が発生し、
大西洋沿岸地域だけでなく内陸部も破壊されるほか、巻き上げられたちりが厚い雲をつくり、
空を暗くするとみている。
　マルクワルト君は地元の科学コンテストに提出した「アポフィス・キラー小惑星」と題する
研究の中で自らの計算結果を明らかにした。

We think too much and feel too little,
more than machinery we need humanity,
more than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness,
without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.
